What is HIM?
Health Information Management (HIM) is the practice of maintenance and care of health records by traditional (paper-based) and electronic means in hospitals, clinics, regional health departments, health insurance companies, and other facilities that provide health care or maintenance of health records.
With the widespread computerization of health records and other information sources, including hospital administration functions and health human resources information, health informatics and health information technology are being increasingly utilized in information management practices in the health care sector.
To be the professional entity that enhances healthcare regionally and globally by elevating practices and standards pertaining to Health Information Management (HIM) and become the reliable source for education, research and credentialing.
Participating in transforming the quality of healthcare through elevating the standards of Health Information Management.
Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI), ensures the quality and safety measures are applied in hospitals and health centers, which include the medical records departments/sections in term of (the location - the safety and security of patient’s medical records – compliance with STDs – staff’s competencies – resources used (paper or electronic) ... etc.
- HIM profession does not exist in Saudi till recently 2011-2012.
- Medical Records Department in public hospitals lack:
- Proper structures,
- Handling of health data,
- Coding & abstracting,
- Privacy & confidentiality,
- Release of information,
- Patient record completion,
- Health professionals’ documentation.
Scientific and professional development in:
- the field of health information management especially (medical records).
- medical coding of diseases, procedures and interventions.
- continuous quality improvement of SHIMA’s members to meet-up the international standard in profession.

- statistical performance reports of healthcare organizations and the quality of services provided to patients.
Facilitate the exchange of scientific information and ideas in the field of Health Information Management among institutions and concerned-bodies within and outside Saudi.
Provide consultations, advices and research-results to the concerned parties to raise the performance level in the field of Health Information Management and Medical Coding.
Contribute to the development of health information management and coding’s standards, participate in monitoring and maintenance of those STDs in Saudi healthcare facilities.
Contribute in raising health awareness among the public.
Organizing conferences, symposia, and seminars to keep up-to-date with rapid growth/change in the field of health information management and health coding.
Encourage the scientific research in various specialized areas.
Issuing periodic scientific journal specialized in health information management, medical records and medical coding.
Conduct scientific studies to improve the quality of health information management, as well as systematic review of the other publications.
Contribute in the training and education programs in health information management field.
Exchanging the experiences and information in the areas of health information management and medical coding.
Encourage the creativity in the field of coding, diseases classification and all related specialties.
Participation in the national and international exhibitions, seminars and activities.
Invite scholars and professionals to participate in the activities of the association.
Participation in the evaluation of health information management professionals’ qualifications and performance with accordance with the relevant authorities.
Participation in the preparation, development, and evaluation of the health information management and coding curricula and scientific subjects taught in governmental and private colleges and universities in agreement with the relevant authorities.
Provide technical advices to healthcare’s facilities about health practices, activities and procedures. Also, evaluate the healthcare facilities (mock survey) for the purpose of adopting standards (STDs) in coordination with Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI).
